Our vision is for older Australians to trust and have confidence that aged care services protect and enhance their safety, health and quality of life.
Everyone has the right to safe, compassionate care. We preserve this right and ensure that people who use aged care are treated with dignity and respect.
Our role
The Commission is the national rights-based regulator of Commonwealth funded aged care services.
Our purpose is to protect and enhance the safety, health, wellbeing and quality of life of older people accessing aged care services in Australia. We aim to ensure that older people trust and have confidence in aged care services.
The new Aged Care Act 2024 , which started from 1 November 2025, places older people at the centre of their aged care experience. It is the main law that sets out how the aged care system operates and replaces the previous Aged Care Act 1997 and the Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission Act 2018.
The Commission, Commissioner and Complaints Commissioner all have functions given to them under the Aged Care Act 2024 (the Act). These functions give the Commissioners the authority to regulate the provision of aged care services and deliver government’s strategic priorities for the aged care system.
Our role as the national regulator of aged care services is to:
- to protect and enhance the safety, health, wellbeing and quality of life of older people
- to promote engagement with older people about the quality of care and services
- to promote confidence and trust in the provision of aged care.
We regulate to ensure that aged care is high quality, safe and person centred, and that care services are well managed.
Our values
Our work is consistent with the Australian Public Service Values, following section 10 of the Public Service Act 1999.
