Vary your registration
A provider’s registration can vary (change) during the registration period. You can ask for changes or we can make changes to protect older people or manage risks.
Provider changes
As a registered provider, you can ask us to:
- add a new registration category
- remove a registration category
- add or remove an approved residential care home
- vary or revoke (cancel) a condition of registration
- suspend your registration
- revoke your registration if you won’t be delivering aged care anymore.
To do this, you need to:
- submit a request to change your registration using the correct form Applications, requests and notification
- pay a fee (if applicable).
When you request a change, we consider:
- your reasons for the change
- the impact on people receiving care
- your ability to continue to meet registration requirements
- any risks you need to manage.
We can add conditions to your registration to manage any risks that the change causes.
If you’re requesting to add a registration category in categories 4, 5 or 6, we may do an audit against the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
A decision to refuse a change is a reviewable decision. That means you can apply for a review of the decision.
You can find out more, on Request reconsideration of a reviewable decision.
Commission changes
We can vary your registration if we need to manage risks to older people or make sure providers are complying with the new Aged Care Act 2024. We can:
- add a new condition to your registration
- vary or revoke an existing condition
- remove a registration category
- shorten the registration period
- remove an approved residential care home
- suspend your registration
- revoke your registration.
Suspension or revocation are serious actions. We can suspend or revoke your registration if there are significant risks to older people or you are no longer suitable to deliver aged care.
If we suspend your registration, your funding will stop. You must still meet your provider obligations if your registration is suspended.
If we revoke your registration, you can’t deliver aged care.
You can find out more about provider obligations and conditions of registration on Provider obligations and conditions of registration.
We follow a fair process before we make a significant change to your registration.
Before we make a final decision, we will:
- give you notice
- offer you an opportunity to respond
- consider all the information we have before we make a final decision.
If you disagree with our decision to vary, suspend or revoke your registration, you can ask us to review it.
You can find out more, on Request reconsideration of a reviewable decision.
Before you request a change
Before you request a change to your registration:
- read the Registration Guidance and Provider Handbook
- consider how the change will affect how you deliver services and your obligations
- see Applications, requests and notifications to find out how to request a change
- prepare all required documents and evidence.
